モザイク状にY染色体を失う浦島太郎

浦島太郎は日本のお伽話の主人公であり、海底にある理想郷から数百年ぶりに若さを保ったままで戻ったが、土産の玉手箱から出た煙を浴びた途端に老人の姿となったという。この画は、その煙が浦島太郎から若さだけでなく一部の細胞のY染色体をも失わせる様子を描いている。Y染色体のモザイク喪失（mosaic loss of chromosome Y (mLOY)）は高齢男性でよく観察され、老化やがんとの関係が指摘されているほか、心疾患のリスクを高める（Sano et al. (2022) Science 377: 292-297, DOI: 10.1126/science.abn3100）ことも明らかとなった。染色体の描写はFukami & Miyado (2022) Reprod. Med. Biol. 21: e12445, DOI: 10.1002/rmb2.12445 を参考にした。
