祇園祭にテロメア鉾が登場

日本三大祭のひとつである京都の祇園祭のハイライトは、山鉾巡行である。数百年の伝統を誇る装飾された多数の鉾や山が京都の中心部を巡る。今、我々の前にやってきたのは、屋根の上の長刀で有名な長刀鉾、と思いきやテロメア鉾。上へ伸びるテロメアのTループ様構造の二本鎖の部分にはTRF1とTRF2を模した赤熊（しゃぐま；藁飾り）が付けられ、3′末端の一本鎖オーバーハングにはPOT1を模した大幡が付いている。これらの因子がシェルタリン複合体として協調的かつ継続的に働くことがテロメアの構造維持に必須である。伝統もテロメアも、維持していくにはそのような不断の努力が必要なのである。
