糖鎖を模した梅が香る細胞膜庭園

日本の初春は梅の花が香る季節である。この手入れの行き届いた梅園のユニークな特徴は、動物細胞の細胞膜の外側の情景を模していることだ。地面は細胞膜の脂質の親水性頭部を表しており、手前の梅の幹と枝は、糖鎖修飾を受けた膜タンパク質に見えるよう手入れされている。遠方にも糖鎖のように見える多数の梅の木が見える。庭石は未修飾の膜タンパク質を表している。かごの真下に見える地面が少し盛り上がった部分と、奥に見える池は、それぞれ脂質ラフト（脂質組成が異なるマイクロドメイン）と、進行中のエンドサイトーシスを表現している。
