A frog and a lizard rush ahead in the race to live out their lifespan, while a turtle walks slowly at its own pace. Based on a large amount of data from long-term observations of the aging and longevity of various tetrapod ectotherms in the wild, Reinke et al. attributed the longevity of turtles to the physical protection of their bony shells and their relatively slow pace of life (Reinke et al. (2022) Science, 376: 1459-1466, DOI: 10.1126/science.abm0151). The evolutionary process of turtles never ceases to fascinate us.
