A full moon rises over the torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima (Hiroshima Prefecture), with countless reflections on the waves. Upon closer inspection, the numerous moon figures seen on the waves are actually cells of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. In addition to cells undergoing vegetative growth, cells in the process of sexual reproduction (conjugation, first and second meiosis) and asci containing spores are visible in the foreground.
